It’s a battle of teams from the East Division on the ice in the Garden State. The New York Islanders are on the road as they travel to face the New Jersey Devils Tuesday night. New York earned a 2-0 home victory over Pittsburgh Sunday to earn a split of their two-game series. New Jersey was edged 3-2 at home by Washington as they were swept in their two-game series Sunday afternoon. The teams split two previous meetings this season with the home team winning both times. In the most recent meeting, it was the Devils recording a 2-0 victory here back on January 24.

New York Islanders Seeking Second Straight Win
New York bounced back from an overtime loss Saturday as they blanked the Penguins Sunday to wind up with a split of their two-game set. The Islanders enter this game third in the East Division, two points behind the Capitals for the top spot. In the playoff picture, the team stood three points clear of fifth-place Pittsburgh to remain in the playoff picture. New York is 22nd in goals for as they average 2.67 goals per contest this season. The Islanders are third in the league in goals against as they allow 2.29 goals a night. New York stands tied for 11th with the man advantage as they convert 25% of their power play chances this season. The Islanders are 10th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 81.5% of their shorthanded situations.

Against Pittsburgh on Sunday, the Islanders got back to their strong defensive play and it paid dividends with a victory. In the opening period, New York held a 9-2 shot advantage and skated off with a 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes of play. Oliver Wahlstrom opened the scoring with his third of the year, on the power play, at 19:20 off assists from Nick Leddy and Josh Bailey. The second period saw the Islanders with a 16-8 shot advantage and a 1-0 edge on the scoreboard to take a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of action. Jean-Gabriel Pageau gave the Islanders an insurance marker with his eighth of the season, on the power play, at 14:56 off assists from Wahlstrom and Josh Bailey. The third period saw New York outshot 10-5 with neither side scoring, leaving the game 2-0 at the final horn. Ilya Sorokin made 20 saves in the shutout victory for New York, who held a 30-20 edge in shots on goal. Semyon Varlamov is expected to get the start in goal here.

New Jersey Devils Looking to Bounce Back
New Jersey was swept in their two-game set at home by Washington over the weekend and looks to regroup here. The Devils entered Monday night seventh in the East Division, 12 points behind division-leading Washington and nine back of the Flyers for the final playoff spot. New Jersey stands tied for 23rd in the league in goals per game as they average 2.65 goals per contest this season. The Devils are 18th in goals against as they allow 2.94 goals a night on the year. New Jersey is 23rd in the league in power play success as they convert 16% of their chances with the man advantage. The Devils stand 31st in penalty killing as they successfully get through only 62.3% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

On Sunday, New Jersey battled but suffered their second straight loss to the Capitals on the weekend. The Devils were outshot 13-7 in the opening period but skated off tied at one after 20 minutes of play. Mikhail Maitsev opened the scoring with his second of the year at 6:45 off assists from P.K. Subban and Pavel Zacha. Washington evened the score later in the period. In the second period, New Jersey held a 10-9 shot advantage but was outscored 2-1 to trail 3-2 after 40 minutes. After falling behind 2-1, Yegor Sharangovich tied the score with his third of the year at 3:20 off assists from Travis Zajac and Miles Wood. New Jersey gave up the go-ahead goal late in the period. In the final period, the Devils had a 4-1 shot advantage but neither side scored, leaving the hosts a goal short as time expired. Mackenzie Blackwood made 20 saves for the Devils, who were outshot 23-21, in the loss. He should be between the pipes in this contest as well.

The Vancouver Canucks will remain in the Bell MTS Place on Tuesday night to take on the Winnipeg Jets in a North Division matchup. These teams played on Monday night and Vancouver picked up a 4-0 shutout victory over Winnipeg. The Vancouver Canucks (9-14-2, 20 points) are sixth in the North Division after snapping their four-game losing streak on Monday. The Winnipeg Jets (13-7-1, 27 points) are third in the North Division and snapped a four-game winning streak after Monday’s loss.

This will be the fifth matchup between Vancouver and Winnipeg this season and the season series is tied at two games apiece so it’ll be interesting to see which team can come back and take the lead. Let’s take a deeper dive into the matchup to decide where we should be placing our wagers.

Boeser Leads the Way
The Vancouver Canucks have been struggling in the early stages of this season and one of the bright spots is the play of right winger Brock Boeser, who has been playing extremely well to begin the season. The team has a handful of players listed on the injury report so the depth of the Canucks will be tested. Boeser is leading the team in points and tied for third in the league in goals as he has 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) this season and has not recorded a point in his last three games played. In the last game against the Winnipeg Jets, he struggled as he finished without scoring a point and attempted just two shots in 18:01 on the ice. Boeser has shown the ability to be one of the best scorers and it’ll be time to see if the Kings can figure out a way to take advantage of one of the better goalie situations in the league.

Thatcher Demko and Braden Holtby have split time in the net this season for the Canucks and have tried to get on a roll for the season. Demko got the nod in the goal in the last game against the Jets, he shined and did not allow a goal on 27 shots in a win to bring his record to 5-9-1 this season. There has been no announcement of who will be in the net for this upcoming game but this could be the time for Demko to win the job permanently. Vancouver has allowed 85 goals this season, which is 30th in the league. They have been just below average against opposing power plays as they have killed 75-of-93 (80.65 percent) of them so far this season. The Jets are a great offense so this will be a chance for the Canucks to see how great they can be.

Center of Attention
The Winnipeg Jets have been doing well in the early stages of this season and one of the bright spots is the play of center Mark Scheifele, who has been playing extremely well to begin the season. The team only has Tucker Poolman on the injury report so this will be one of the more healthy games for the team this season. Scheifele is top 10 in the league in points, assists, and goals as he has 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) this season and has recorded six points in his last five games played. In the last game against the Vancouver Canucks, he struggled as he finished without scoring a point and attempted just two shots in 22:52 on the ice. Scheifele has shown the ability to be one of the best players in the league and it’ll be time to see if the Jets can figure out a way to take advantage of one of the worst goalie situations in the league.
Connor Hellebuyck has spent a majority of the season in the net for the Winnipeg Jets this season. He was in the goal in the last game against the Vancouver Canucks, he struggled and allowed three goals on 18 shots in a loss to drop his record to 10-5-1 this season. The Jets have allowed 57 goals this season, which is 10th in the league. They have been very good against opposing power plays as they have killed 44-of-55 (80 percent) of them so far this season. The Canucks are an above-average offense so this will be a chance for the Jets to get back on track.

CAROLINA HURRICANES VS. NASHVILLE PREDATORS
If familiarity breeds contempt, there should be animosity aplenty on Tuesday when the Carolina Hurricanes and the Nashville Predators meet at Bridgestone Arena.

Oddsmakers opened the Hurricanes as -130-moneyline favorites versus the Predators, while the game's total opened at 5.5.

Last time out for Nashville, they were a 3-1 winner as they battled the Blue Jackets at home. Moneyline bettors who got the Predators at -125 were rewarded, while the 4 combined goals moved the game UNDER for totals bettors.

In their last action, Carolina was a 3-2 winner on the road against the Panthers. Bettors on Carolina at +102 on the moneyline collected their winnings from that game, while the total score (5) sent UNDER bettors home happy as well.

The Carolina Hurricanes head to the Music City in Nashville to take on the Predators in a Central Division matchup. The Hurricanes are third in the division with a 14-6-1 record, and the Predators are sixth in the division with a 10-11-0 record. Both teams have won two straight going into this matchup.

Predators Looking to Continue Strong Play
It's been a rough year for Nashville, who simply haven't been themselves this year. They're coming off a sweep against a struggling Columbus Blue Jackets team, outscoring their opponent 5-2 over two games, and have won four of their last five.
Their last win, a 3-1 decision over Columbus at home, came off solid all-around team play. Filip Forsberg recorded an assist and continues to lead the team in points with 19 (9 goals, 10 assists), and Nick Cousins, Erik Haula, and Eeli Tolvanen each scored goals. Forsberg's leadership and production has been vital as Matt Duchene continues to not live up to his pricy contract with only eight points and a team-worst plus/minus of -12. All for $6 million.

The Preds score an average of 2.29 goals per game, and allow an average of 3.05. They average 31.9 shots on net per game and allow 29.1 per game, as well. They're right at the top of the bottom third of the league in most statistical categories, but are trending lately with solid team and defensive play.

Juuse Saros played tremendously in the Columbus series, starting both games. He stopped 29 of 30 shots in the first game and 28 of 29 in the second. Seasoned veteran Pekka Rinne started both games of the previous series against Detroit, recording a shutout before allowing five goals in the loss in the second game, splitting the series.

Carolina Hoping to Pick Up Points
Carolina's place in the standings is mostly due to a hot start to the year. In recent games, they dropped three of four against Tampa Bay (a gauntlet for any team in the NHL right now), and recently sweeped two games against the Florida Panthers, a great pick-me-up series against a great team. Both wins came in extra time, the first win in a shootout, the second in overtime.
Brett Pesce and Vincent Trocheck scored in regular time, while Sebastian Aho set up Martin Nečas for the game winner in overtime. Nečas had two assists to go with his goal, for three points in the game. Trocheck and Aho lead the team in points with 18 Trocheck with 11 goals and 7 assists, Aho with 6 goals and 12 assists.

Carolina is fourth in the NHL with 29 points over their 14-6-1 record, and has shown streaks of brilliance over that time. They average 3.24 goals scored per game and allow an average of 2.76 goals to opponents. They have one of the top power play units in the league, capitalizing on 27.9% of their opportunities (fifth in the NHL), and rank 12th in the league for penalty kill with 80.8%.

The Carolina goaltenders have been excellent as of late despite the losses to Tampa Bay, recording save percentages above 90% in six straight games, including Alex Nedeljkovic's shutout against Tampa Bay on 2/20.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are first in the Central division at 14-4-1 and 29 points. Tampa Bay is tied with Florida for the lead but has one more victory then the Panthers. Tampa Bay defeated Dallas 5-0 in the first of two consecutives games with the Stars on Saturday. Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped all 20 shots he faced in net for his second consecutive shutout and the 23rd of his NHL career. Tampa Bay has won four straight after winning three straight over the Carolina Hurricanes.

With the loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday, the Dallas Stars are 6-6-4 with 16 points and sit in the Central division cellar. Dallas is 13 points off the pace set by Tampa Bay and Florida and one point behind Detroit. Yes that's correct, Dallas is behind Detroit in the Central Division standings. The Stars have lost two straight and three of the last four with only a 3-0 victory over the Florida Panthers mixed in during that four-game stretch. Dallas is having problems scoring, while it's blue line and defense has played above-average through the first 16 games of the regular season.

Tampa Bay is Best in the NHL in Goal
Tampa Bay as the NHL's best goalie at this point of the regular season. The Lightning are allowing an average of only 2.05 goals-per-game with the biggest reason being Andrei Vasilevskiy. The Russian is 12-3-1 with a 1.75 goals against average and .938 save percentage. In Saturday's victory over Dallas, Vasilevskiy pushed aside all 20 shots he faced in net and prior to that on Wednesday in a 3-0 shutout victory over Carolina, Vasilevskiy pushed aside all 25 shots the Hurricanes put on net.The penalty kill unit for Tampa Bay has also come through big as Tampa Bay is holding opponents scoreless 88.1% of the time when short-handed.
The Lightning are scoring an average of 3.63 goals per game. Leading the way in goals scored is veteran Steve Stamkos with 10 and the center is also leading Tampa Bay in points with 19. Victor Hedman is the assist leader for Tampa Bay with 15. Tampa Bay is scoring 27.0% of the time on its power play and the Lightning have scored 17 goals with the man advantage.

Injury Report: Mitchell Stephens is due back in mid-April, while Nikita Kucherov and Anders Nilsson are out indefinitely and Marian Gaborik is out for the season.

Dallas needs help scoring goals
Dallas has lost three of its last four and over that period, the Stars have scored 6 goals or an average of 1.50 goals per game and are coming off a game in which they were held scoreless 5-0 by the Tampa Bay Lightning. The leading goal scorer for Dallas is Joe Pavelski with 10 and the veteran center is the leader in total points for Dallas with 20. Defenseman John Klingberg leads the Stars in assists with 11. However, overall this season Dallas is scoring only 2.71 goals-per-game. The power play has scored 27.9% of the time with the man advantage.

Dallas would likely have not won six games if not for solid goaltending and play on the blue line. Dallas is allowing an average of 2.53 goals per game and Anton Khudobin is 4-5-1 with a 2.72 goals-against average and .906 save percentage. Back up Jake Oettinger is 1-0-0 with a 3.00 goals against average and .876 save percentage in four appearances between the pipes. The Dallas penalty-kill unit has been successful 78.0% of the time while shorthanded.

Injury Report: Alexander Radulov is due back in early March, while Tyler Seguin is due back in mid March, Ben Bishop in early April and Steven Johns is lost for the season

The Washington Wizards (13-19), fresh off a one point loss to the Celtics, have opened as a one point dog to the visiting Memphis Grizzlies (15-15). Memphis demolished Houston on Monday night 133-84, and figure to have a little momentum heading into tonight’s game.

In their win over the Rockets, the Grizzlies held Houston to just 4-of-45 three point shooting. The Rockets shot a franchise low 27.6%, and the 49 point margin of victory was the largest in Memphis franchise history. Justise Winslow, in just his fourth game back from injury, led the way with 20 points. Brandon Clarke added 16 points as the Grizzlies raced out toa 63-37 halftime lead and never looked back.

Washington let one slip through their fingers. With :47 left in the game, the Wizards were up 110-105. The Celtics finished the game on a 6-0 run, including two Jayson Tatum layups in the last :15. Bradley Beal scored 46 points in the loss, while Russell Westbrook added 24 points and 11 rebounds. Davis Bertans scored 20 points off the bench.

On the injury front, Memphis will be without Grayson Allen, who is currently in concussion protocol after taking an elbow to the head last Friday night. The Wizards will be without Thomas Bryant, who is lost for the season, and Ish Smith (Quad).

Grizzlies Look to Climb Above .500 With Win
Early season injuries really did a number on Memphis, but slowly and surely the Grizzlies have gotten their pieces back. Now, with the exception of Grayson Allen, Memphis is as deep as they have been all season. The addition of Justise Winslow makes the Grizzlies a little more formidable as well.

Ja Morant leads a balanced Grizzlies offense with 18.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg, and 7.2 apg. Jonas Valanciunas has averaged 15.8 ppg and 11.1 rpg, and has hit 37.0% of his three point attempts. Dillon Brooks has averaged 15.5 ppg and 3.1 rpg, and Kyle Anderson has added 13.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, and 3.6 apg. As a team, the Grizzlies have an effective field goal percentage of 52.5%, 20th in the league. Memphis is ninth in the league in turnover percent (12.2%), seventh in offensive rebounding percent (24.1%) and 29th in free throws per field goal attempts (.169).

Defensively, the Grizzlies are 25th in the NBA in opponent’s effective field goal percent (54.9%), first in opponent turnover percentage (14.9), ninth in defensive rebound percent (78.7%), and 15th in opponent free throws per field goal attempts (.199).

Wizards Look to Bounce Back From Loss
Like Memphis, the Wizards were adversely affected by injuries and COVID early this season. Despite losing Thomas Bryant and Ish Smith, the Wizards have righted the ship recently and have started to win some games they were not supposed to win. The confidence is high, and should stay that way even with the tough loss to Boston last game.
Bradley Beal is the main reason for Washington’s recent swagger. Beal has put the team on his back and taken command of the scoring, almost single handedly keeping his team in games. He has averaged 32.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg, and 4.9 apg. Russell Westbrook has averaged 19.7 ppg, 9.9 rpg, and 9.8 apg. Robin Lopez, who has taken on additional minutes with the loss of Thomas Bryant to injury, has averaged 8.0 ppg and 4.3 rpg. Davis Bertans has been deadly from beyond the arc, hitting 37.6% of his attempts while averaging 11.3 ppg and 6.1 rpg.

As a team, the Wizards have an effective field goal percentage of 52.2%, 23rd in the league. Washington is tenth in the league in turnover percent (12.2%), 19th in offensive rebounding percentage (21.2%), and third in free throws per field goal attempts (.204). Defensively, the Wizards are 25th in the NBA in opponent’s effective field goal percent (54.8%), 15th in opponent’s turnover percentage (12.8), 19th in defensive rebounding percentage (77.5%), and 28th in opponent’s free throws per field goal attempts (.223).

Two Eastern Conference teams will face off against each other on Tuesday as the Atlanta Hawks travel to AmericanAirlines Arena to take on the Miami Heat. Atlanta enters this game with a 14-20 record after losing to Miami on the road by ten points in its last game while Miami enters this game with a 17-17 record after beating Miami at home by ten points in its last game. This game will start at 7:30 P.M. EST.

Hawks Fire Their Head Coach
The Atlanta Hawks enter this game in poor form as they have lost three of their last four games including a ten-point road loss against the Miami Heat in their last game. In that game, Atlanta's offense struggled as it only scored 99 points while shooting just 41.4% from the floor and just 22.9% from the three-point line. To make matters worse, Atlanta decided that it was time to find a new head coach as the front office fired head coach Lloyd Pierce. As a result, Nate McMillan has been named the interim head coach and he will be looking to get the Hawks back on track moving forward.
Leading the Hawks offensively is point guard Trae Young who is averaging a team-high 26.5 points per game along with a team-high 9.5 assists per game. However, he is also averaging a team-high 4.3 turnovers per game as he has been very careless with the basketball up to this point.

Following the loss to Miami, Atlanta general manager Travis Schlenk discussed how difficult it was to fire Lloyd Pierce.

"These are real-life decisions that affect multiple families, and they are not easy. But we felt like for the organization it was the best thing for us to do moving forward."

Miami Looks To Extend Its Winning Streak
The Miami Heat enter this game in fantastic form as they are in the middle of a six-game winning streak including a ten-point home victory against the Atlanta Hawks in their last game. In that game, Miami's offense was pretty good as it scored 109 points while shooting 90.9% from the free throw line. Now, the Heat will be looking to extend their winning streak with another home game up next. Luckily, Miami has won each of its last five home games as it has looked extremely comfortable at AmericanAirlines Arena over the past few weeks.
Leading the Heat offensively is forward Jimmy Butler who is averaging a team-high 20.1 points per game along with a team-high 7.8 assists per game. However, he was forced to miss the last game due to a knee injury and he is questionable for this contest.

Following the victory against Atlanta, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra praised his team for playing well despite being a bit shorthanded.

"With Jimmy out, I thought guys really stepped up and filled in in a lot of different places."
