The WCC Tournament will get underway on Thursday night when the San Diego Toreros take on the San Francisco Dons at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. San Diego enters as the No. 9 seed with a record of 3-10 overall (2-7 WCC), including a 90-84 home loss to the Pepperdine Waves last Saturday as a 4.5-point underdog. It's been an uneven year for San Francisco, which finished in eighth place at 10-13 (4-9 WCC) after losing the regular season finale 76-69 to the Pacific Tigers as a 1.5-point road favorite last weekend.

These teams met once in the regular season back on New Year's Eve, with San Francisco winning 70-62 at home as a 13-point favorite. San Diego still leads the tight all-time series 44-41.

San Diego hopes to close out season on high note
The Toreros were limited to just 13 games in the regular season with multiple COVID pauses, and just could not generate any sort of positive momentum. In last Saturday's regular season finale, San Diego was on the back foot quickly as Pepperdine had first half runs of 11-0 and 14-1, and a late flurry of 28 points in the final 10 minutes wasn't enough to make up for it.

Yauhen Massalski had a career day off the bench with 30 points, five rebounds and three assists on an ultra-efficient 14/16 shooting from the field. San Diego was unable to hold up defensively, as Pepperdine shot 12/22 from three-point range and 55.6% from the field overall.

“Obviously, it’s not where it needs to be to beat anybody in our league. Not the attention to detail, the aggressiveness, the controlling and finishing,” head coach Sam Scholl said to the San Diego Union-Tribune about his team's defensive performance.

San Diego finished a little better against the spread in the regular season at 6-7, although it failed to cover in each of its last three games. Overs are 8-5 for the Toreros, with each of their last three games going easily over the betting total.

The Toreros are averaging 67.4 points per game on shooting splits of 47.3% from two and 31.6% from three. San Diego's defense has struggled mightily, ranking 320th in scoring at 77.8 points per game allowed with opponents shooting 51.1% from two and 39% from beyond the arc.

Joey Calcaterra was named All-WCC Honorable Mention with 13.8 points, two assists and 1.1 steals per game to lead the Toreros. Josh Perrish is at 10.5 points per game on 52.9% shooting from the field, while Massalski piled up an average of 9.8 points, eight rebounds and 2.1 blocks.

Starting forward Ben Pyle missed the Pepperdine game for unknown reasons and his status is uncertain. Guard Chris Herren Jr. has been limited to four games for undisclosed reasons.

San Francisco loses sixth straight game
A once promising season for San Francisco that included a win over No. 21 Virginia has fallen apart, as the Dons enter the WCC Tournament on a six-game losing streak. The Dons had a chance in the regular season finale at Pacific with a 50-48 lead midway through the second, but would fail to score on nine of its next 11 possessions as the Tigers pulled away.

Jamaree Bouyea closed out his terrific season with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Julian Rishwain had 21 points off the bench on 7/11 shooting from the floor. The Dons had a miserable shooting performance from the perimeter, going 4/24 from three-point range.

"Incredibly disappointing, but we will try to get it figured out as we head to Las Vegas," said head coach Todd Golden to San Francisco's official website."At the end of the day we are not playing well enough, we've got to find a way to get back to playing the way we were prior to the break. When you aren't making shots, you have to defend well and take care of the ball and we aren't doing enough of that right now.

San Francisco had a tough regular season against the spread at 9-14, and only covered once during its current six-game losing streak in a 79-73 loss to the BYU Cougars as a double-digit underdog. Overs are 11-12 for the Dons, with three of their last four games going over the betting total.

The Dons have nearly even marks on both sides of the ball, averaging 71.9 points per game on shooting splits of 51.2% from two and 33.9% from three. Opponents are putting up 70 points per game against the Dons while shooting 49.8% from two and 33.6% from beyond the arc.

Bouyea earned first-team All-WCC honors, leading the Dons with 17.5 points and 3.5 assists per game on 49.8% shooting from the floor. Khalil Shabazz has added 15.6 points and 1.9 steals per game, with Dzmirty Ryuny adding 8.9 points and a team-high 5.6 rebounds per game.

San Francisco had a full roster available last weekend and doesn't have any reported injuries heading into the WCC Tournament.

It will be a Big Ten battle Thursday night, as Nebraska travels to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes.na Garza, who has been sensational this season, averaging nearly 25 points per game, and is a double-double threat every night.na Garza go to work and impose his will, as he has on so many teams this season.

Iowa is rolling at this point in the season, and are another team who many think can make some noise in the NCAA Tournament. They must not take Nebraska lightly though, and take care of business on their home floor. In what will be their second to last game of the year, Iowa hopes to play a solid game, and use it as a warmup game for their season finale against Wisconsin, who has given them problems in the past.

In the first round in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament 10th seed Illinois State takes on seventh seed Northern Iowa where the winner gets a 24-win Drake team.

This game will take place at the neutral site of the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Illinois State finished in the basement of the MVC this season with a 4-14 conference record and they lost three of their last four games including their last two. They were at home in their last two games and dropped them both to their opponent in this game in Northern Iowa. The issue for the Redbirds on the season is their defense, which is giving up an average of 75.2 ppg.

Northern Iowa ended the season just the opposite of Illinois State winning three of their last four games including their last two. The team is 9-15, overall, and 7-11 in conference play and in this game look for their first three-game win streak of the season.

Barnburner Loss
In the last game of the season Illinois State was at home and lost to Northern Iowa 94-87 in double overtime. It was the third time this season the Redbirds gave up at least 94 points. On the season in MVC play the team did not have any wins against teams that had a winning conference record.
The Redbirds have three players, all guards, that are averaging in double figures led by D.J. Horne (15.3 ppg). He hopes to repeat the last game facing Northern Iowa, except a win this time, where he scored a season-high 34 points on 56.7% shooting while he only totaled 17 points on poor shooting in his previous two games. Antonio Reeves (12.5 ppg) has not shot the ball well in the last few games and especially in the last two where he has not shot over 33.3% and combined for 21 points. Josiah Strong (11.7 ppg) did have 14 points in the OT loss to UNI but while his scoring was solid for a few games he has totaled 20 points in the last two games where he did not shot over 41.7% in either.

Forward Dusan Mahorcic (9.6 ppg 7.2 rpg) is the leading reboiunder and key player in the paint for the Redbirds. Even in the two straight losses to end the season he did more than his part totaling 38 points and 17 boards where in both games he shot at least 70% from the field.

The Scoring is Key
In the last game Northern Iowa put up 94 points and that was their second highest point total of the season. The team is averaging 69.7 ppg on the season and scoring is key, as they have lost their last seven games when they have failed to put up at least 70 points.
The Panthers are a balanced team with four players that are averaging at least 11 ppg led by guard Trae Berhow (13.2 ppg), who has not been shooting the ball that well in the last few games but did total 29 points and 10 rebounds in the two wins over Northern Illinois. FW Austin Phyfe (12 ppg 7.3 rpg) has scored at least 18 points in two of the last three games and in his last two games pulled down 17 rebounds.

G Bowen Born (11.4 ppg) had 21 points in the last game after totaling 22 points in his previous two games. FW Noah Carter (11.3 ppg 5.8 rpg) went for 22 points in the OT win over the Redbirds shooting 66.7% while in his previous two games he totaled 19 points and failed to shoot over 33.3%.

Utah State plays host to Wyoming in a Mountain West Conference matchup between two teams that have each won two in a row.

Wyoming has won two in a row and their last two games were canceled due to the pandemic. Before the two wins they had two games against Utah State postponed and this will be their lone game against them this season. The Cowboys are 12-9, overall, but only 6-8 in conference play. There averaging as well as giving up an average of 76.1 ppg and their offense was legit in winning two in a row.

After two costly losses Utah State has rebounded and won two in a row. They are in second place in the MWC at 13-4, and 16-7 overall, only a half game back of San Diego State and Colorado State, who they do not face again. Like the Cowboys the Aggies’ offense stepped up in the last two games and on the season their defense has been the strength of the team only giving up an average of 63.6 ppg.

Great Start
In their last game Wyoming was on the road and beat New Mexico 79-67 where they got off to a great start outscoring the Lobos by 17 points in the first half. The Cowboys shot 48.2% from the floor and allowed New Mexico to shoot 44.8% in a game where Wyoming never trailed and led by as much as 27 points.
G Marcus Williams (15.9 ppg) leads the Cowboys and after two poor shooting games where he totaled 25 points he shot 44.4% in the last game putting up 15 points. Fellow guard Hunter Maldonado (12.2 ppg) is in the same boat as Williams, as he did not shoot well for a couple of games but rebounded in the last one to go for 14 points on 55.6% shooting and was a monster on the glass with 16 rebounds. Third leading scorer Kenny Foster (10.4 ppg) is out with a knee injury. The Cowboys need to shoot the rock well from outside, as they are a guard dominated team with four guards their leading scorers.

On the season Wyoming is 4-4 on the road.

Killing it On the Boards
Utah State was at home in their last game where they blew out Nevada winning 87-66 where they killed it on the glass. They shot a lower field goal percentage (42.6% to 47.1%) and were ice cold from deep (4-22) but they had 17 offensive rebounds and only gave up one and also forced 19 turnovers.

7’ C Neemias Queta (14.8 ppg 9.7 rpg) is the leading scorer and rebounder for the Aggies and has scored at least 26 points in three of his last four games and has totaled 30 rebounds in his last two games. FW Justin Bean (10.8 ppg 7.8 rpg) came up big in the last two games where he totaled 36 points and 23 rebounds. Marco Anthony (10.7 ppg) is the only backcourt player for Utah State averaging in double figures and he had 11 points in the last game after totaling 13 points in his previous two games. The Aggies have a strong frontcourt and they will look to feed those guys in the paint facing a Wyoming team that is guard dominated.

This season Utah State is 9-2 at home.

The Carolina Hurricanes are coming off two impressive victories, defeating the Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators to catapult them to the top of the Central Division. While the Hurricanes have been playing well this season, the Detriot Red Wings have done anything but and look like one of the worst teams in the NHL this season. As the Red Wings travel to Carolina for this game, they will hope that they can pull off the improbable upset and return to the win column for the first time in almost a week.

Detroit isn't scoring
The Red Wings have only won 7 games this season out of the 25 games they have played. The team has struggled across the board but the offensive play has been awful in particular. Aside from Bobby Ryan and Anthony Mantha, the Red Wings have nobody scoring more than 6 goals this season as part of an offense that is scoring 2 goals per game. If the offense doesn't start to improve around those two, we can expect to see Detroit trade them away only to make the offense worse but build for the future.
Along with the struggling offense, the defense hasn't fared much better, allowing 3.2 goals per game and 11 in the last two games. Jonathan Merrill and Patrik Nemeth have been playing well, combining for 2.0 defensive point shares and 60 blocked shots but the rest of the unit has struggled and opponents are able to constantly find scoring opportunities against them. In addition, the Red Wings goaltending duo of Jonathan Bernier and Thomas Greiss has struggled this season with Greiss in particular, allowing 3.3 goals per game.

Hurricanes offense fuels streak
The Carolina Hurricanes have won the last three games with a sweep of the Panthers and a 4-2 victory against the Nashville Predators. The Hurricanes have been playing well offensively the entire season averaging 3.2 goals per game and the winning streak has been no exception. Vincent Trocheck has led the way this season with 12 goals but Sebastian Aho has turned up the heat with some big goals in recent games to give him 8 on the season.

While the offense is picking up the pace to lead the winning streak, the defense has been consistently strong for the past few seasons. Dougie Hamilton and Jaccob Slavin have led the top pairing, combining for 2.9 defensive point shares and 48 blocked shots. Brett Pesce, Brady Skjei, and Jake Gardiner have also played well to give the Hurricanes a great defense with all 3 pairings. In addition, the goaltending trio of Petr Mrazek, James Reimer, and Alex Nedeljkovic have combined to save .914 percent of shots and allow only 2.4 goals per game.
