PHILADELPHIA FLYERS VS. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
If familiarity breeds contempt, there should be animosity aplenty on Thursday when the Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins meet at PPG Paints Arena.

Oddsmakers opened the Penguins as -105-moneyline favorites versus the Flyers, while the game's total opened at 6.5.

The Flyers were a 5-2 loser in their most recent outing on the road against the Penguins. That made winners of bettors who got Pittsburgh at +111 on the moneyline, while the total score (7) was good news for OVER bettors.

The Philadelphia Flyers will remain at the PPG Paints Arena on Thursday night to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in an East Division matchup. These teams faced off on Tuesday where the Penguins picked up a 5-2 win behind right winger Kasperi Kapanen scoring a pair of goals. The Philadelphia Flyers (11-5-3, 25 points) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (12-8-1, 25 points) are both tied for fourth in the East Division. A big story will be that Sidney Crosby will not play here as he is in COVID protocol.

These teams have played against each other and the goals have piled up so it will be interesting to see which defense can slam the brakes on the opposing offense. Let’s take a deeper dive into the matchup to decide where we should be placing our wagers.

Winner Winner Left Winger
The Philadelphia Flyers have been playing very well in the early stages of this season and one reason has been the play of left winger James van Riemsdyk, who has been playing extremely well to begin the season. The team is relatively healthy as only Morgan Frost is the only player listed on the injury report. Riemsdyk is seventh in the league in points, goals, and assists as he has 18 points (10 goals, 16 assists) this season and has been on fire by scoring eight points in his last five games. In his last game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, he finished with an assist while attempting just three shots in 15:40 on the ice. Riemsdyk has shown the ability to be one of the best players and it’ll be time to see if the Penguins can continue to step up on the offensive side of the puck.
Carter Hart and Brian Elliott have both spent time in the net this season for the Flyers and have been playing solid as a goalie unit. Hart got the nod in the goal in the last game against the Penguins and he allowed five goals on 27 shots in a loss to bring his record to 6-4-3 so far this season. On the season, he allowed 43 goals in 403 shots. Philadelphia has allowed 59 goals this season, which is 12th in the league. They have been below average against opposing power plays as they have killed 48-of-66 (72.73 percent) of them so far this season. The Penguins are an average offense in the league so this will be a chance for the Flyers to get back within the top of the East Division.

Penguins Need to Stay Hot Without Crosby
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been playing well in the early stages of this season and one reason has been the play of left winger Jake Guentzel, who has been playing extremely well to begin the season. The team is going to need to figure out how to score without star Sidney Crosby due to COVID protocols. Guentzel is tied for the team-lead in points as he has 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) this season and has recorded a point in four of his last five games. In his last game against the Philadelphia Flyers, he finished with an assist while attempting just two shots in 19:13 on the ice. Guentzel has shown the ability to step up and it’ll be time to see if the Penguins can continue to step up on the offensive side of the puck.

Tristan Jarry has spent the majority of time in the net this season for the Pittsburgh Penguins and have been playing decently well this season. In the last game against the Flyers, he allowed two goals on 42 shots in a win to bring his record to 8-6-1 so far this season. On the season, he allowed 44 goals in 439 shots. Pittsburgh has allowed 67 goals this season, which is 20th in the league. They have been below average against opposing power plays as they have killed 49-of-66 (74.24 percent) of them so far this season. The Flyers are an average offense in the league so this will be a chance for the Penguins to climb the standings in the East Division.

The Rangers will travel to New Jersey to face their rival on Thursday night in the Devils. Both the Rangers and the Devils have played poorly this season but both teams are loaded with young talent and exciting players. With both teams near the bottom of the standings in the East Division, the losses can start to pile up, making this game all the more important to win for both teams.

Rangers offensive woes have been their downfall
The Rangers have won only 8 of their first 20 games this season and have struggled in particular on the offensive side this season. Chris Kreider is the leading goal scorer with 10 goals and Pavel Buchnevich and Ryan Strome have 6 goals each, but the young promising skaters like Kappo Kakko and Alex Lafreniere have failed to make an impact this season (combining for only 5 goals this season).

While the offense has struggled, the defense has kept the Rangers in many of their games, allowing only 2.6 goals per game. The pairing of Adam Fox and Ryan Lindgren has been exceptional this year, combining for 3 defensive point shares and 67 blocked shots while K'Andre Miller and Jacob Trouba have given the Rangers depth as they have combined for 1.9 defensive point shares and 57 blocked shots. In addition, starting goaltender Igor Shesterkin has continued to improve, allowing only 2.4 goals per game and posting a .917 save percentage.

Devils young core is carrying team
The Devils are a young team with many of their key contributors 23 or even younger. The best player defensively has been Ty Smith with the 20-year-old leading the team with 1 defensive point share and 12 blocked shots while Mackenzie Blackwood has led the way in net as the 24-year-old is allowing only 2.5 goals in the 10 games he has started.

In addition, the offense has been led by 19-year-old Jack Hughes who has 4 goals and 8 assists this season. On the offensive side, Miles Wood and Pavel Zacha have made a major impact on the offense with the two combining for 13 goals this season. Unfortunately, the rest of the offense has struggled this season, with the team only scoring 2.5 goals per game.

The Buffalo Sabres will head to Nassau Coliseum to face off against the New York Islanders in Eastern Division action. The Islanders are tied for first place in the division, while the Sabres are in dead last. In three previous matchups this season, the Islanders have won all three.

Sabres Looking for Win Among Trade Rumors
It's been a rough decade for Buffalo fans. The team hasn't been to the Playoffs in 10 years, and haven't won more than 39 games in a season over that time period. This season is looking on par with the last 10, as they've posted a 6-11-3 record and find themselves in last place in the East Division.
As they face another losing season, rumors are swirling regarding Jack Eichel trades, but that won't stop the Sabres from giving it their all on Long Island. They've lost four straight games and are looking to get back on track with a win over a division leader.

Their last time out was a 3-2 loss to the Rangers. Sam Reinhart and Tobias Rieder each scored goals for the Sabres, while Rasmus Dehlin, Jack Eichel, Victor Olofsson, and Rasmus Ristolainen each added assists. Olofsson currently leads the team with 16 points (seven goals, nine assists), Reinhart leads the team with eight goals, and Eichel has 13 assists.

The Sabres score an average of 2.20 goals per game, and allow an average of 2.95 goals per game. Surprisingly, they rank third in the league in powerplay percentage with 30.7%, and rank 12th in the league in the penalty kill at 80.4%.

Islanders Standing Strong Atop Division
The Islanders are currently tied for first with the Capitols in the East Division with 28 points. They've won four of their last five, and won every game in February against teams not from Pittsburgh (1-3 against the Penguins during that time).
They recently put up seven goals against Boston, and got the shutout against Pittsburgh on Sunday. Their most recent game was a 2-1 road win against New Jersey. Anders Lee and Oliver Wahlstrom each scored goals, while Mathew Barzal, Andy Greene, Nick Leddy, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau each recorded assists. Barzal leads the team with 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists), Anders Lee leads the Islanders with 10 goals, and Leddy has the most assists with 14.

Goalie Semyon Valamov had an excellent outing against the Devils, saving all but one of 29 shots for a .966% save percentage. Valamov has a 10-4-3 record with a 2.10 GAA and .927% save percentage on the year.

The Islanders average 2.64 goals per game and allow 2.23 per game to opponents. They score on 24.6% of powerplay chances and kill 82.8% of penalties, despite their star Mat Barzal leading the team in penalty minutes.

If familiarity breeds contempt, there should be animosity aplenty on Thursday when the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Chicago Blackhawks meet at United Center.

Tampa Bay continues to win as the Lightning have won five straight and are now tied for first in the Central division with Carolina Hurricanes. Tampa Bay is 15-4-1 with 31 points. Tampa has had two consecutive shutout victories over Dallas winning the first 5-0 followed by a 2-0 win on Tuesday. Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped all 28 shots he faced in net to post his third consecutive shutout and has not given up a goal in 200 minutes. Following its shutout victory over Dallas, Toronto is allowing an average of only 1.95 goals per game this season.

Chicago has played its way into fourth place in the Central Division two points behind third-place Florida and three points behind both Tampa Bay and Carolina. The Blackhawks have won three of the last four including a 7-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Patrick Kane scored his 400th goal in the NHL in the victory. The Blackhawks are combining strong play in the attacking zone averaging 3.13 goals per game and solid play at the blue line and between the pipes allowing an average of 2.87 goals per game.

Andrei Vasilevskiy is the NHL's best
The Tampa Bay Lightning are allowing an average of only 1.95 goals-per-game. The Tampa Bay blue line has played impressively in front of goal, but the big reason for the success of the Lightning is goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. The Russian netminder has posted three consecutive shutouts and has not allowed the puck to get past him in over 200 minutes. Vasilevskiy is 13-3-1 with a 1.65 goals-against average and .942 save percentage. Opponents have scored only 28 goals in Vasilevskiy’s 17 appearances. The penalty kill unit for Tampa Bay has been successful 88.6% of the time while shorthanded.
Tampa Bay is no slouch in the attacking zone as the Lightning are averaging 3.55 goals per game led by Steven Stamkos with 10. Close behind Stamkos is Ondrej Palat with nine goals. Stamkos is tied with Victor Hedman for the overall points lead for Tampa Bay with 20 each and Hedman is the leader in assists for Tampa Bay with 16. Tampa Bay has scored 18 power play goals paced by Palat with six. The power play unit for Tampa Bay is scoring 26.5% of the time with the man advantage.

Injury Report: Mitchell Stephens is out until mid-April, while Marion Gaborik, Nikita Kucherov and Anders Nilsson are all out indefinitely.

Kane reaches another milestone
The Chicago Blackhawks are having a strong start to their 2021 NHL season in much of that is thanks to the play of veteran Patrick Kane. Kane scored his 400th career goal on Sunday in the Blackhawks 7-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Kane became the 100th player in the NHL to score 400 goals and is the fourth player in Chicago's franchise history to reach that milestone following Hall of Famers Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull and former star Steve Larmer. This season Kane is leading Chicago in goals scored with 11, in assists with 23 and overall points with 34.

The blue line and goalkeepers are doing their share as well as Chicago is allowing an average of only 2.87 goals per game and the penalty-kill unit has a success rate of 75.0% when shorthanded. Kevin Lankinen is 9-3-3 with a 2.55 goals-against average and .916 save percentage in 15 appearances in goal for Chicago. Lankinen and backup Malcolm Subban each have posted one shutout this season for the Blackhawks.

Injury Report: Chicago has a laundry list of injuries. The most notable being Dylan Strome who is questionable for Thursday with a concussion, Jonathan Toews who is out indefinitely and Brent Seabrook who is out indefinitely. Also included on the list are Lucas Carlsson, Kirby Bach, and Andrew Shaw.
