Fact: The top 10 riders in the jockey standings win nearly 90 percent of the races run during the meet. Make sure to pay attention to who is riding the horse you are wagering on as these jockeys are in the top 10 of the standings for a reason.

Be alert for horses taking suspicious drops in class. For example, a horse that just raced competitively or won a claiming race of $25,000 is now running at a lower claiming level. This can be a sign something is wrong with the horse and the owners are trying to get rid of the horse.

Pace makes the race. Learning a horses running style, and laying out the flow of the race can make a big difference in your handicapping.

A change in running style may take a race or two before showing results. For example, a closer that suddenly tries to wire the field might fade badly in their first attempt to lead all the way around the track, but fire at a good price in their next race with the new style.

The morning line isn't who the racetrack oddsmaker likes in the race. it's his prediction of how the public will bet the race. So remember, the morning line favorite isn't necessarily the best horse in the race, but rather who will likely take the most money.

A successful bettor looks for value. Always look for overlays, which are horses that go off at higher odds than their perceived chances of winning. Betting on the races is equal parts handicapping, and making wagers that are worthwhile to your bankroll.
