Pay attention to horses that run their lifetime, highest speed rating in their first race after a layoff. It's usually one of two things: A - the horse has achieved a higher level of performance or B - the horse will bounce and have a lackluster race.

Horses usually put forth their best efforts when making their third starts off of a layoff.
At this point the horse is usually completely fit, and ready to run a big one

Pay attention to jockeys who've previously ridden multiple horses in the same race.
Although they aren't perfect, jockeys will usually stay on the horse they think has the best chance to win.

Pay attention to quirky, track specific biases. For example, Santa Anita's 6.5-furlong, downhill turf races strongly favor outside speed and Saratoga's inner-turf, route races have been disproportionately won by the rail horse.

Don't be afraid to skip a race. If you aren't feeling it or are in a slump, it's OK to let a race go by and clear your head.
There will always be another race. You want to wager on only those races where you feel confident.

When making exotic wagers, pay attention to pool totals. For example, if a Pick 3 has a pool total of $2,000 and the trifecta has a pool total of $25,000, it's wiser to bet the trifecta than it is the Pick 3.

Remember: Set a bankroll to start your day, and make it last throughout the entire card you are playing. Money management is important. You don't want to run out of money after three races, only to see the horses you would have played in race four win. Going into the day with a wagering plan is vital to your success at the track.

A common betting error is to make all exotic wagers (exacta, trifecta, superfecta), and pass up a win bet on a horse you like. Always remember there is nothing wrong with a win bet. Even a small win bet can generate a profit or at least fund your bankroll for more risky wagers

Watch for horses that improve their fractions from one race to the next. Faster fractions can be a huge a clue for a horse that's rounding into top form.

In horse racing you are not betting against the house. You are betting against all the other players in a pari-mutuel system which creates value and makes the sport one of the best gambling ventures you can make.

Be alert for horses taking suspicious drops in class. For example, a horse that just raced competitively or won a claiming race of $25,000 is now running at a lower claiming level. This can be a sign something is wrong with the horse and the owners are trying to get rid of the horse.
