MLB PREMIUM SELECTIONS<P>World Series Game 4<P>October 31st, 2001<P>Arizona Schilling -130<BR>NY Yankees Hernandez<P>The Yankees, behind seven solid innings from Roger Clemens, climbed back into the series with a 2-1 victory over Arizona. Mariano Rivera pitched 2 innings of relief to nail down the win for New York.<P>Manager Bob Brenly apparently made the decision to send Curt Schilling to the mound in Game 4. Schilling was once again dominating in Game 1 of the series, as he held the Yankees to a single run. Schilling has posted a 4-0 record with an ERA under 1 in 4 postseason starts this season.<P>With the momentum of this series in the balance, Joe Torre will hand the ball to his own big game pitcher, Orlando Hernandez. "El Duce" has split his starts this postseason, but has been a clutch performer for this Yankees team under his current regime. Against the A's, Orlando got the series back to NY by holding the A's in check over five innings in a 9-2 Yankees win. In the ALCS, however, he was the starter in a lopsided 14-3 Seattle win.<P>Schilling will making this start on just three days rest. For him to be sucessful, he must overcome the tremendous odds of others pitching in the same situation. In 15 prior starts by pitcher's on three days rest in the postseason, they have compiled a 1-9 record with an ERA of almost 10. The lone win was by Jamie Moyer of Seattle against the Indians this season.<P>The Yankees offense continues to struggle to score runs. In the postseason to date, the Yankees are averaging less than 3 runs per contest. Fortunately, the Yankees have been blessed by excellent starting pitching, and absolutely perfect work out of the bullpen.<P>The bullpens could play a key role for the Diamonbacks in this game. You figure, if Schilling gets into any trouble, that Brenly would turn to Batista for some innings, but other than that the Diamondbacks pen is shaky and unreliable. <P>For the Yankees to have any chance against Diamondbacks in Game 4, they must score first to apply the pressure to the Arizona hitters, who managed only three hits in Game 3. Even a single run could make the difference for NY as they look to even the series, and possibly take control with a win.<P>While it appears that Schilling is an unbeatable pitcher, he is being asked to pitch on short rest.
