The New Jersey Devils will travel to the KeyBank Center on Thursday night to take on the Buffalo Sabres in an East Division battle. These teams have played four times already, with the Sabres having a 3-1 edge. They played on Tuesday in New Jersey and Buffalo picked up a 4-1 win after scoring three goals in the third period. The New Jersey Devils (6-6-2, 14 points) are tied for seventh in the East Division and are riding a three-game losing streak. The Buffalo Sabres (6-8-2, 14 points) are also tied for seventh in the East Division and are coming off their road victory.
These two franchises have been playing very similar up to this point in the season but it seems like Buffalo has found the advantage they needed. Let’s take a deeper dive to decide if we believe in the trend or not.
Step Up and Be Hughes The New Jersey Devils have been average in the early stages of this season and one of the reasons is the play of center Jack Hughes, who has been playing extremely well to begin the season. The Devils have no one listed on the injury report so they have their entire roster on tap. He leads the team in points and assists with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) this season and has been adding a point to his stats in three of his last four games. In the last game against the Buffalo Sabres, he finished without a point on four shot attempts in 19:09 on the ice. Hughes has shown the ability to be a leading player and needs to be more a scoring factor to complement their defense. Buffalo is a solid defense so it will be interesting to see how Hughes can attack it.
Mackenzie Blackwood has spent the majority of time in the net this season for the Devils and have been playing above-average as a goalie unit. Blackwood was forced out due to COVID protocol but has played in the last four games and but lost his last two games. Blackwood is 4-2-1 this season with 2.25 goals against per game and a 93.496% save rate, which is sixth in the NHL. In his last game against these Buffalo Sabres, he allowed three goals on 36 shots. On the season, he allowed 16 goals on 246 shots. New Jersey, as a team, has allowed 41 goals this season, which is seventh in the league. They need to be better at killing power plays as they have allowed 18 power play goals in just 41 opportunities (59.09 kill percentage). Buffalo shoots the puck well so it’ll be interesting to see how this game unfolds.
Passing the Puck Well The Buffalo Sabres have been shaky in the early stages of this season and one of the bright spots is the play of center Jack Eichel, who has been playing extremely well to begin the season. The team is missing center Zemgus Girgensons but it is a longer-term injury so the lines will get some chemistry along the way while he recovers. The second-overall pick from 2015 leads the team in assists and is tied for seventh in the NHL in power-play assists with 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) this season and has recorded a point in three of his last four games played. In the last game against the New Jersey Devils, he finished with an assist on a pair of shots on goal in 17:31 on the ice. Eichel has shown the ability to be one of the best players and needs to be more a scoring factor to complement their defense. The Devils are one of the best teams on the defensive sides of the ice so it will be an interesting matchup. Linus Ullmark and Carter Hutton have split time in the net this season for the Sabres and have been playing well as a goalie unit. Ullmark is 5-4-2 this season with a 2.51 goals against per game and a 91.489% save rate. In his last game against the New Jersey Devils, he allowed a goal on 41 shots. On the season, he allowed 28 goals on 329 shots. Buffalo, as a team, has allowed 47 goals this season, which is 10th in the league. They need to be better at killing power plays as they have allowed eight power-play goals on 35 power plays opportunities (77.14 kill percentage). New Jersey is one of the lesser teams at scoring and these teams played against each other so much that Ullmark and co. have seen almost everything the Devils can throw at them.

The Predators got a shutout win in their last game facing a Red Wings’ team that is tied for the fewest points in the NHL.
The Predators have won two in a row after dropping seven of nine games. They are only three points clear of Detroit in the Central and they are 2-1 facing them this season. Nashville has only given up two goals in winning two in a row and their main issue on the season is an offense that ranks third to last in the league only averaging 2.16 goals per game.
The Red Wings have lost four of their last five games and in that span they only scored six goals. Not hocking that Detroit is going through another tough season with an “attack” that ranks dead last in the NHL averaging just 1.86 goals per game.
Solid Power Play In the last game the Predators beat the Red Wings 2-0 where they scored both of their goals in the third period on the power play. Filip Forsberg scored his ninth of the season and Eeli Tolvanen netted his second and Roman Josi assisted on both goals. Pekka Rinne (5-5-0 2.36 GAA) stopped all 24 shots he faced for the shutout win and he has only given up more than two goals in one of his last seven starts.
Juuse Saros (3-5 3.47 GAA) has had a tougher go at it in net this season than Rinne but after giving up 11 goals in two starts he was pretty solid in the last game giving up two goals even though he only faced 21 shots.
Forsberg leads the Preds with nine goals and 17 points and Josi is the only other player on the team in double digits in points with 10. Forsberg has been on a tear as of late with a goal in each of his last two games and has three goals and three assists over his last five games.
Shutout Again The 2-0 loss was the second shutout loss for the Red Wings in their last four games where the team has only totaled four goals. Jonathan Bernier (4-3-0 2.66 GAA) was in the net for the last game giving up two goals on 33 shots and he has only given up more than two goals in one of his last five games. Thomas Greiss (1-10-3 3.16 GAA) may get the nod in this game and he gave up four goals in his last start and three goals in his previous two starts. Dylan Larkin is the only Detroit player in double-digits in points with 11 (4 goals 7 assists) and has two assists and no goals in his last five games. Bobby Ryan leads the club with only five goals, and he has lit the lamp one time in his last six games.
On the season the Red Wings are 2-9 at home.

This game is a matchup between two teams headed in different directions, as the Jets have won three of their last four games while the Canadiens have lost five of their last six games.
The Canadiens have lost three in a row and five of their last six games. They are in the middle of the pack in the North Division and only one point back of the Jets. The offense has been solid on the season for Montreal and while the D has given up an average of 2.78 goals the team has given up 13 goals in their last three games.
The Jets have won two in a row and three of their last four games and they can pass Montreal in the North with a home win. This is the first game of the season facing the Canadiens and they have lost their last four games on home ice facing them.
Can’t Pad the Points The Canadiens have lost two in a row and both losses came facing the Ottawa Senators, who are tied for the fewest points in the NHL. They lost the last game facing them 5-4 in a shootout where Shea Weber scored twice and the team could not complete the comeback after being down 3-1 in the second period. Carey Price (5-3-3 2.95 GAA) was in the net in the last game giving up four goals and he has given up nine goals in his last two starts. Jake Allen(4-2-1 2.14 GAA) may get the go in this division matchup and he has given up three goals in each of his last two starts after giving up only five goals in his previous three starts.
Tyler Toffoli ranks tied for third in the NHL with 12 goals and also leads Montreal with 17 points. He has three goals and one assist in his last five games and five other players for the team have double digits in points. Jeff Petry has 16 points (6 goals 10 assists) and he has no goals and two assists in the last five games.
Dubois Ends it Quick In the last game, the Jets beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in OT where Pierre-Luc Dubois played the hero scoring the game-winning goal only 27 seconds into overtime. It was a good win for the Jets, who looked like the win was in the bag, but they gave up the game-tying goal with only 38 seconds left in regulation. Dubois scored twice in the game where G Connor Hellebuyck (8-5-1 2.64 GA) stopped 31 0f 34 shots and he gave up three goals in his previous start as well. He had a game off recently and should go in this game and if he does not Laurent Brossoit (3-1-0 2.24 GAA) will get the call.
Mark Scheifele leads the Jets in points and is tied with Nikolaj Ehlers with 10 goals. The balanced offense of the Jets has five players with at least 15 points and Scheifele has scored a goal in five straight games and Ehlers has a goal and two assists over his last five games.
