He’s challenging every non‑entrant to step into the arena and prove they’re not just background noise in a contest built for people who can actually take a punch. The Miami Heat will travel to the Smoothie King Center on Thursday night to take on the New Orleans Pelicans in an interconference matchup. This will be the final matchup between these teams as they played back on Christmas in Miami where the Heat picked up a 111-98 victory. The Heat are seventh in the East with a 17-18 record and are coming off a 94-80 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. The Pelicans are 11th in the Western Conference with a 15-19 record. This will be the second game of a back-of-back as they faced off against the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.

These teams have a bit of separation between them on the statistical side of the game but have some of the more talented rosters. Let’s take a deeper dive into the matchup to decide where we should be placing our wagers. PUBLISHED BEFORE FIRST GAME

Center of Attention
The Miami Heat have been relying on center Bam Adebayo to carry the offensive load this season. He is averaging 19.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5.4 assists, a block, and 0.9 steals in 33.9 minutes on the court. He is shooting the ball at a great clip with his limited range as he is 56.3 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from three, and 84.7 percent from the free-throw line. In his last game against the Hawks, Adebayo played 33 minutes and finished with 11 points, two rebounds, and three assists. If he can figure out a way to be more effective in his time play, the Heat will be in a great spot here.
The Miami Heat have been a solid defense to begin the year as they are giving up 108.8 points per game, which is fifth in the league. In their last game against the Atlanta Hawks, they allowed 94 points on 34-of-71 (47.9 percent) from the floor, 13-of-36 (36.1 percent) from beyond the arc, and 15 free-throw attempts. If they can figure out how to limit the amount of open shots from the field being taken against them, they should be great in this game.

Sophomore Star > Sophomore Slump
Power forward Zion Williamson has been one of the best young players in the league as well. He is averaging 25.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.7 blocks in 33 minutes on the court. He needs to keep improving his shooting numbers as he is 61.4 percent from the floor, 31.6 percent from the three-point line, and 70.7 percent from the charity stripe. In his last game against the Jazz, Williamson played 34 minutes and finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, a steal, and six turnovers. If he can figure out how to clean up his sloppy play, it will do wonders for New Orleans.

The New Orleans Pelicans have been one of the lesser defenses in the league at this point as they are giving up 115.9 points per game, which is 26th in the NBA. In their last game against the Utah Jazz, they allowed 124 points on 46-of-101 (45.5 percent) from the floor, 17-of-43 (39.5 percent) from beyond the arc, and shot 18 free-throws. If the Pelicans can lower the amount of open looks they allow from beyond the arc, they will be an even better team.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will play for the second straight night when visiting the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday after playing on the road Wednesday night against the Dallas Mavericks. The Thunder are 14-20 following a 126-96 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Saturday. Oklahoma City had its two-game winning streak snapped with the loss to Denver and the Thunder have lost eight of the last 12. Oklahoma City is fourth in the Northwest division 12 ½ games behind front running Utah.

San Antonio defeated the New York Knicks 119-93 on Tuesday night as Trey Lyles scored 18 points and Dejounte Murray chipped in with 17 points. San Antonio is first in the Southwest Division with a two-game lead over both Memphis and Dallas. The Spurs have won four of the last six. San Antonio is allowing nearly the exact same number of points the Spurs are scoring as the offense generates 111.3 points per game and the defense is allowing an average of 111.1 points per game.

Thunder Needs Help on Offense
The Oklahoma City Thunder are 27th in the NBA in scoring with an average of 106.7 points per game. Oklahoma City is shooting only 44.9% overall and 34.4% from long distance. Shai Alexander-Gilgeous is the leading scorer for the Thunder with an average of 23.2 points per game and is one of 7 players for OKC averaging double figures in scoring. Gilgeous-Alexander not only fills the hole better than the rest on OKC, but is also the dish leader with a team-high 6.3 assists per game. Oklahoma City averages 23.4 assists per game and 13.7 turnovers per contest for an assist to turnover ratio of 1.7.
Off the boards, Oklahoma City is averaging 44.3 rebounds per game with 36.6 on the defensive end and only 7.6 per game off the offensive glass. Oklahoma City is allowing an average of 112.4 points per game and opponents are shooting an average of 46.3%.

Injury Report: Darius Miller is questionable Wednesday for Oklahoma City, while George Hill and Hamidou Diallo are out until mid-March and Trevor Ariza is out indefinitely

San Antonio winning by the slimmest of margins
San Antonio is scoring 0.2 points more per game than the Spurs are giving up. Nonetheless, San Antonio is playing .581 basketball and leading the Southwest Division by two games over the Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks. San Antonio's offense is generating 111.3 points per game led by DeMar DeRozan who is scoring an average of 20.0 points per game. The Spurs have 7 players averaging double-figures in scoring and as a team San Antonio shoots 45.5% overall and 36.5% from long distance. DeRozan is also the leader in assists for San Antonio with a team-high average of 7.3 dishes per contest. Coach Gregg Popovich stresses protecting the ball and San Antonio does that very well averaging only 10.4 turnovers per game and with an average of 25.3 assists per game San Antonio has an NBA leading 2.4 assist to turnover ratio.

The Spurs are averaging 45.0 rebounds per game with 35.8 on the defense and 9.1 off the offensive glass. The leading rebounder is Jakob Poeltl with an average of 7.4 boards per game. The Sacramento Kings will be going for their second consecutive road win when they face the Portland Trailblazers on Thursday night. The Kings are coming off a 123-120 win over the Los Angeles Lakers as 3.5-point favorites. The Trailblazers are coming off a 108-106 win over Golden State as 1.5-point underdogs.

Portland is 7-3 in its last 10 games against Sacramento.

Kings Trying To End Slump
The Kings looked like a team that could compete for a playoff spot earlier in the season, but they haven’t played well in recent weeks, losing 10 of their last 12 games. They will try to put an end to their slump with a win over the Trailblazers, which will give them their second win in a row.

Sacramento has played well offensively, averaging 114.4 points per game. They finished with 123 points in their last game, making 60 percent of their field goals and 48 percent of their three-pointers.

Buddy Hield led the way for Sacramento with 29 points, six rebounds, and six assists. De'Aaron Fox finished with 23 points and eight assists, while Harrison Barnes added 20 points, three rebounds, and six assists for the Kings.

Sacramento hasn’t been as good defensively, giving up 114.4 points per game. They gave up 120 points in their last game and will need a better performance if they want to win this game.

Trailblazers Going For Second Consecutive Win
The Trailblazers followed up their four-game losing streak by winning their last two games. They will try to keep the momentum going with a win over the Kings, which will give them their third win in a row and third consecutive win over the Kings.

Portland is a good offensive team, averaging 114.4 points per game. They finished with 108 points in their last game, making 41.9 percent of their field goals and 28.6 percent of their three-pointers.

Damian Lillard led the way for Portland with 22 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Carmelo Anthony finished with 22 points, two rebounds, and four assists, while Robert Covington added 15 points and five rebounds for the Trailblazers.

Portland has struggled defensively, giving up 115.1 points per game. They gave up 106 points in their last game and will need to keep it up if they want to get the win.

The Phoenix Suns will host the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. This will be the last NBA game played before the All-Star break. The Warriors and Suns have met once so far this season, with Phoenix winning at home 114-93 as a two-point favorite on January 28.

The Suns have the second-best record in the Western Conference at 23-11. Phoenix won its last game 114-104 against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday as a 1.5 point favorite. Golden State is 19-17, ninth in the conference. The Warriors played Wednesday night and lost to the Portland Trailblazers 108-106 as a one-point favorite.

Golden State playing second game in two days
The Golden State Warriors will be playing their second game in two days and their third straight road game after losing to Portland on Wednesday night. Steph Curry led the Warriors with 35 points in the loss to Portland, but Damian Lillard, who finished with 22 points for Portland, made the go-ahead three-point shot that gave the Trailblazers the victory. Before facing the Trailblazers, the Warriors lost to the Lakers 117-91 as a three-point dog.
On the season, Golden State is 12th, averaging 114 ppg, shooting 46.5% from the floor, which is 15th, and sixth shooting 37.8% from three-point range. Defensively Golden State is 21st, holding the competition to 112.8 ppg. Steph Curry kept the Warriors in playoff contention averaging 29.7 ppg, third in the league while shooting 47.8% from the floor, 41.1% from three-point range, and 93.4% from the charity stripe. Andrew Wiggins is second on the team with 17.1 ppg, and Kelly Oubre Jr, who was acquired from the Phoenix Suns in the offseason, has added 15.5 ppg. Oubre did not play on Wednesday against Portland and is questionable for Thursday against the Suns.

In Golden State's 21 point loss to the Suns back in January, the Warriors only shot 38.4% (33-99) from the floor, 28.9% (11-38) from three-point range, and only got to the line to attempt eight free-throws while making six. The Warriors were outrebounded in that game 59 to 53 but did win the offensive rebounding battle 12 to 9. Steph Curry had a team-high 27 points on 10 of 20 shooting from the floor in that game.

Suns Surging in the Western Conference
The Phoenix Suns won for the 12th time in 14 games with Tuesday's win over the Lakers. The Suns received a balanced scoring effort, with Dario Saric scoring a team-high 21 points off the bench. Mikal Bridges added 19 points, while Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton scored 17 points in the victory. As a team, the Suns shot 49.4% (38-77) from the field, 55.2% (16-29) from three-point range, and 88% (22 of 25) from the free-throw line.

For the season, the Suns are now averaging 113.4 ppg, which is 13th in the Association. They are shooting 48.3% from the floor, which ranks seventh, and ninth shooting 37.9%. Defensively the Suns and holding their opponents to 107.4 ppg, which is fourth. Devin Booker has missed four games this season and leads the Suns with 25.2 ppg. Chris Paul is second in scoring with 16.2 points and a team-best 9.0 assists per game, followed by Deandre Ayton with 14.6 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, along with Mikal Bridges with 13.9 ppg.

In the first head-to-head meeting against the Warriors in January, the Suns shot 46.6% (41-88) from the floor, 34.4% (11-32) from three-point range, and 91.3% (21-23) from the free-throw line. Bridges led the Suns with 20 points in that victory.

Thursday College Hoops Sharp Action

11 a.na lost to Richmond 79-72 back on February 20th, although they covered as 9-point road dogs.

9 p.m. ET: Central Florida at East Carolina

This late night American Athletic Conference showdown features two teams trending in opposite directions. Central Florida (9-11) may have a losing record but the Knights have played well down the stretch, winning three straight and four of their last five. UCF has covered in four straight games, three of which were as a favorite. Meanwhile, East Carolina (8-8) is crumbling down the stretch. The Pirates started the season 7-1 but have gone just 1-7 since. This line opened with UCF listed as a short 2.5-point road favorite. Respected money has poured in on UFC, driving this line up from -2.5 to -3.5. Ken Pom has UCF winning by one point, but he also has UCF ranked much higher (95th vs 137th). One variable to keep in mind here: East Carolina will be playing their first game in nearly a month. They've had their last five games postponed due to COVID and haven't played since February 8th. We've seen many teams struggle in their first game back off a COVID layoff.

9 p.m. ET: Arizona State at Colorado

Both of these PAC-12 opponents are feeling good about themselves and riding win streaks. Arizona State (10-11) may have a sub .500 record but the Sun Devils have won three straight, beating Washington State and Washington twice. Now they face Colorado (19-7, ranked 24th), who has also won three straight games, beating Oregon State, USC and UCLA. This line opened with Colorado listed as an 11-point home favorite. The public is pounding Colorado as a ranked home favorite, yet we've seen this line dip slightly down from -11 to -10.5. Some shops are even down to -10. This signals some respected money grabbing the points with the road dog Sun Devils. Arizona State has value as a double-digit unranked conference road dog vs a ranked opponent. Arizona State also has value as a buy low "bad" ATS team (5-16) against a sell-high "good" ATS team (15-11). Ken Pom has Colorado winning by twelve points, which means the betting market is higher on Arizona State than the advanced analytics.
