In the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference third seed Missouri State takes on a sixth seed Valparaiso team they beat in both matchups this season. This game will take place at the neutral site of the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Missouri State had won seven straight games before losing to Evansville in their season finale. The team was 16-6, overall, and 12-6 in MVC play and while not a high scoring team their offense came up big in their two wins over Valpo this season.
Valparaiso had lost two in a row before beating Indiana State in the season finale. Th team has a good defense and that is what they will need to play to advance in the conference tournament being a team that is only averaging 65.4 ppg. Valpo had a down season being under .500, overall, (10-17) and in MVC play (7-11).
Hark Back to the Two Valpo Games Missouri State did lose their last game of the season after winning seven in a row and they would like to hark back to early in the MVC season where they beat Valpo twice by double figures. In the last game they lost to Evansville 73-62 where they did not shoot the rock poorly with a FG% of 46.3% but they allowed the Purple Aces to shoot 51% from the floor and 50% (12-24) from 3-pt land. The Bears are led by the frontcourt forward duo of Isiaih Mosley (20 ppg 6.1 rpg) and Gaige Prim (16.8 ppg 9 rpg). Mosley totaled 48 points in the last two games on the season and had 29 points in each of the two wins facing Valpo this season.
Prim led the Bears in rebounding on the season, ended the season on fore averaging 23.8 ppg over his last five games, and went for a double-double in each of the wins over Valpo this season. Guard Ja'Monta Black (9.9 ppg) led all guards for the Bears on the season and he needs to regroup after the last two games where he only scored three points in each on 25% shooting while totaling 27 in the two wins over Valpo.
Play Like the Last Game In their season finale Valpo snapped their two-game skid beating Indiana State 70-58 behind a solid all-around game. The team shot a more than legit 54% from the floor and held the Sycamores to 32.7% shooting. In the two losses facing Missouri State this season the team allowed the Bears to shoot at least 54% from the floor in each game. Valpo only has two players that are averaging in double figures on the season in the forward/guard duo of Ben Krikke (12.3 ppg) and Donovan Clay (10.1 ppg). Krikke totaled 25 points in the last two games of the season where he had six rebounds in each. Despite being a guard Clay is 6’7” and led the team in rebounding this season at 5.5 rpg and he was held scoreless in the last game and has failed to score over five points in three of his last five games. G Sheldon Edwards (7.8 ppg) has failed to score in double figures in the last five games but did total 19 points in the two losses against Missouri State.

The 2021 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament begins today in Pensacola, FL with four matchups at two different venues.na Miles added 19 points and eight assists, while Zay Willimas and Khalyl Waters combined for 21 points.
The Sun Belt Conference is likely to send just one team to the NCAA tournament in two weeks. That team will be the winner of the conference tournament. Will either of these teams make a historic run into the Big Dance? It will start with a win today.
Mavericks Hope to Ride Momentum Into Postseason The Texas-Arlington Mavericks finished middle of the road in the western division of the Sun Belt Conference. They were swept by top seed Texas State, and 1-2 against second seed Louisiana. That put them in a log jam with Arkansas State and UALR, but the Mavericks went a combined 4-2 against those schools, giving them the third seed. The Mavericks averaged 68.8 ppg, seventh in the SBC. They were last in field goal percent (39.0%), two point field goal percent (41.2%), and fourth in three point field goal percent (35.8%). UT-Arlington averaged 15.5 trips to the free throw line per game, ninth in the conference.
The offense was led by the duo of Shahada Wells (6’0) and Sam Griffin (6’3). Wells averaged 16.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg, and 3.8 apg. Griffin averaged 13.6 ppg, 2.0 rpg, and 2.3 apg. David Azore (6’4) missed the entire month of January, but averaged 12.1 ppg, 5.0 rpg, and 2.2 apg in his 11 games this season.
Defensively, the Mavericks allowed 70.4 ppg (9th). Their opponents shot 43.8% overall (9th), 47.0% inside the arc (3rd), and 37.0% from beyond the arc (10th). The Mavericks gave up 16.6 trips to the free throw line per game (7th), and had a -5 rebounding margin. The Mavericks did lead the conference in blocked shots per game with 5.1.
Trojans Go for Massive Upset Against Mavs The Troy Trojans finished last in the east mainly because of an offense that was one dimensional. While the team was fifth in the conference in two point field goal attempts (48.2%), they were dead last in three point field goal percent (29.9%). That allowed teams to pack their defense into the paint area and force long shots. In all, the Trojans averaged just 64.5 ppg (11th) and shot 41.0% from the field (11th).
The Trojans were led on offense by the trio of Nick Stampley (6’6), Zay Williams (6’9), and Kam Woods (6’1). Stampley averaged 12.8 ppg and 6.9 rpg, while Williams averaged 10.5 ppg, 8.1 rpg, and 1.3 apg. Woods averaged 10.3 ppg, 2.3 rpg, and 1.7 apg.
Defensively, the Trojans allowed 69.9 ppg (8th). Their opponents shot 43.6% overall (8th), 47.7% inside the arc (8th), and 37.2% from beyond the arc (11th). The Trojanss gave up 16.9 trips to the free throw line per game (8th).

A spot in the WCC quarterfinals will be on the line when the Loyola Marymount Lions take on the San Francisco Dons in Friday night’s second round in Las Vegas. Loyola Marymount enters the tournament as the fifth seed at 12-8 overall (7-5 WCC) after dropping the regular season finale to the No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs 86-69 as a 25-point road underdog last weekend. Eighth-seeded San Francisco had no trouble taking care of the San Diego Toreros 67-51 in the first round Thursday night as a eight-point favorite to improve to 11-13 (5-9 WCC).
The Lions pulled off the sweep in the regular season, winning 68-60 at home on January 10 and 68-63 at San Francisco on February 18 while covering the spread both times.
San Francisco wins for first time since January It’s been a disappointing season for San Francisco overall after the Dons had a very promising showing in nonconference play, but they will hope to build momentum after destroying San Diego in the WCC Tournament first round to snap a six-game losing streak. The Dons were locked in defensively from the opening tip with a 30-17 lead at halftime, and extended the advantage to 55-28 midway through the second before San Diego got a little closer in garbage time.
Jamaree Bouyea led all scorers with 18 points to go along with six assists, while Dzmirty Ryuny added 13 points and nine rebounds. San Francisco dominated defensively, holding the Toreros to a mark of 32.7% from the field including a miserable 2/17 from three.
San Francisco is now 10-14 against the spread this season with the highlight coming on November 27 in a massive upset of No. 21 Virginia, and had failed to cover in five of its previous six games prior to destroying San Diego. Overs are 11-13 for the Dons after the dominant defensive showing against San Diego, snapping a stretch of three overs in the previous four games.
The Dons are averaging 71.7 points per game this season on solid shooting splits of 51.2% from two and 33.9% from three. Opponents are scoring 69.2 points per game against San Francisco after the strong defensive showing on Thursday while shooting 49.8% from two and 33.6% from beyond the arc.
Bouyea was named first-team All-WCC with an average of 17.5 points and 3.6 assists per game while shooting just shy of 50% from the field. Khalil Shabazz has poured in 15.3 points per game, while Ryuny is adding 9.1 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds per contest.
The Dons had a full roster available for Thursday, and don’t expect to have any absences against Loyola Marymount.
LMU looks for WCC Tournament run The Lions played like one of the best teams in the WCC over the final seven games of the regular season, including a respectable showing against undefeated Gonzaga in last weekend’s finale. Loyola Marymount even managed a 20-15 lead midway through the first half, but Gonzaga quickly responded with runs of 12-1 and 14-2 to take command early in the second.
Two separate Lions recorded double-doubles, with Eli Brooks putting up 20 points and 11 rebounds plus a 19-point, 10-rebound performance from Mattias Markusson on an efficient 8/9 from the field. Loyola Marymount shot a strong 49.1% from the floor, but could not match Gonzaga’s offense at 58.3% with 32 trips to the free throw line, and 17 Lions turnovers didn’t help the upset bid.
“If you’re going to play a team like that, to give them that many possessions back, your chances of winning are minimal,” head coach Stan Johnson said to the Associated Press. “That really changed the game. Our turnovers led to easy baskets and got them in transition.”
The Lions enter the postseason at 11-8-1 against the spread, and surged late by covering in six of their last seven games including wins as an underdog against San Francisco and Pepperdine. Overs are 11-9 for the Lions, and finished on a hot streak with five of their last six games going over the betting total.
Loyola Marymount is averaging 70.6 points per game and has shot the ball at an above-average clip at 51.6% from two and 34.4% from three. Opponents are putting up 68.9 points per game on the Lions on shooting splits of 50% from two and 34.9% from beyond the arc.
Scott had a monster year with 17.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game to lead the Lions in all three categories and earn first-team All-WCC honors. Keli Leaupepe is also in double figures scoring, while Joe Quintana put in 9.6 points and 2.2 assists per game on 45% shooting from three.
Dameane Douglas, who was having a terrific sophomore season with 13.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game on 53.9% shooting from the field in 12 games, was ruled out for the rest of the season with an undisclosed injury in late January.

The 2021 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament begins today in Pensacola, FL with four matchups at two different venues.na and Marko Andric combined for 22 points and nine rebounds. The Trojans won despite hitting just three of their 17 three point attempts (17.6%). They limited the Cajuns to just 6-of-23 from beyond the arc.
The Sun Belt Conference is likely to send just one team to the NCAA tournament in two weeks. That team will be the winner of the conference tournament. Will either of these teams make a historic run into the Big Dance? It will start with a win today.
Mountaineers Try to Put Late Slump Behind Them The Mountaineers have been on a bit of a slide heading into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and they get a tough matchup in the first round against Arkansas-Little Rock. Appalachian State is a team built to pressure and force turnovers, getting as many easy buckets as they can. The Mountaineers are second in the league in steals with 7.8 per game, and give up the fewest steals on offense with 4.9 per game. That has helped the Mountaineers give up the third fewest shots per game in the league (55.7). As a team the Mountaineers rank fifth in the Sun Belt Conference in scoring at 69.3 ppg. They are eighth in field goal percent (41.7%), fourth in two point field goal percent (48.9%), and 10th in three point field goal percent (31.7%). Appalachian State’s attacking style has earned them an average of 18.3 free throw attempts per game, fourth most in the league.
The Mountaineers are led by a quartet of guards in Adrian Delph, Donovan Gregory, Justin Forrest, and Michael Almonacy. Delph averages 12.4 points per game, and is a 37.4% three point shooter. Gregory averages 11.6 ppg, and 5.3 rpg, and Forrest averages 11.7 ppg and 3.0 rpg. Almonacy averages 11.4 ppg and 3.8 rpg.
Defensively, the Mountaineers rank seventh in the league in scoring defense, allowing 68.6 ppg. Appalachian State is 12th in field goal percent defense (45.5%), 12th in two point field goal percent defense (52.6%), and fifth in three point field goal percent defense (34.6%). The Mountaineers, despite their pressure defense, are stingy in free throws allowed, giving up just 14.6 trips to the line per game (2nd). Appalachian State has also averaged a -4 rebounding margin in league games this season.
Little Rock Brings Big Frontcourt to SBC Tournament The Little Rock Trojans stumbled throughout February, but managed to win their final regular season game heading into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Trojans sat at 10-7 overall at the end of January, but hit a slump at the worst time. The Trojans low point came in a weekend sweep by ULM, the league’s worst team. They won the regular season finale despite a very poor shooting effort. A lot of that had to do with the departure of All-SBC guard Markquis Nowell, who opted out midway through the season. The sophomore’s career at Little Rock is likely done, and the Trojans missed his playmaking ability. The Trojans averaged 66.3 ppg in conference games this season (8th). They shot 44.1% from the field (5th), 51.6% on two point attempts (2nd), and 30.4% on three point attempts (11th). Little Rock attempted just 18.7 three pointers per game which was the second lowest number in the league. Little Rock was adept at getting to the free throw line, earning 19.7 attempts per game (1st).
Little Rock was led by Nikola Maric (6’10), who averaged 14.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg, and 1.6 apg. Ruot Monyyong (6’10) averaged 11.7 ppg and 11.0 rpg, while 6’7 forward Ben Coupet averaged 10.0 ppg and 3.5 rpg. While the Trojans have a formidable and big front line, their guard play has produced very little following the departure of Nowell.
Defensively, the Trojans rank third in the SBC in points allowed (67.1 ppg), sixth in field goal percent defense (43.0%), fifth in two point field goal percent defense (47.0%), and ninth in three point field goal percent defense (36.3%). Little Rock is stingy with the free throw line, with their opponents averaging a league lowest 14.2 trips to the line per game. The Trojans also enjoy a +3 rebounding margin.
