Time to play the Game

With great sadness I've learned that legendary handicapper Larry Ness has passed away today. Larry passed away at the young age of 68.

Larry's top play was appropriately titled "Legend Play" and apt as the title Larry goes out a legend in the handicapping world. You might recall Larry on the Proline show which aired on Saturday's/Sunday's during the football season.

Another pioneer and great gone too soon.

RIP Legend!

I have read his free plays since I started wagering on sports.

Mike Lee is gone

Mort Olshan of the Gold Sheet is gone

Huey Mahl & Billy "The Greek" Vassal both passed away (First Twenty Publications)

Jim Barnes is still alive but not active (Jim Barnes Journals of Sports Handicapping)

Seattle actuary, Bill Whatmough, who assisted Barnes & Jack Painter has died.

Doc of Doc Sports passed away a few years ago

Hello everyone. This is my first post! I first learned about buying sports picks in 1997 and I have been doing it ever since (off and on). I have not had much luck so I guess that makes me insane, but it's still fun so I will keep doing it. In 1997, I started with a scamdicapper that I don't remember and ATS. At the time ATS was $349 / sport, but they were eventually able to upsell me to the "lock club" which was terrible. My best season ever was 2005 MLB with Tom Law from theswami. I made just over 10k, but I lost all my profit and then some on CBB with The Ticket (also at theswami). In early 2020 I tried buying only the 5% plays on pregame and that was a losing proposition big time. Lately I've been using Docs. I also like to wager on futures and hedge, and I love Formula 1 and have already wagered quite a bit on Max and RB to win the Championship. I'm very interested in the idea of sports betting models and hope to one day soon tinker in them and see if I can have any success on my own. I'm looking forward to being part of the Forum!

I appreciate you posting this as it really brought back memories. I was a proline junkie and watched it religiously when I first got into gambling. Watching and listening to Lee Pete and the gang was like shooting the breeze with old friends. (I didn't live in Las Vegas but could get KDWN at night from the San Francisco area). So sad to hear of Larry's passing. The Proline group didn't always win but they were always entertaining and they at least gave you some rationale for their selections. I respected that group much more so than the current batch of handicappers out there who are mostly fly by night operations (and often scam artists).

Talk about being late to the party, I just saw the date of your original post (2022). I thought this was recent (a similar thing happened with Lee Pete). I guess when these guys are out of the limelight, you lose track of them.
