D Wayne Lukas passed away on Saturday June 28th at the age of 89 years old. He passed away after a brief illness.
Four time KY Derby winner and an amazing 20 time Breeders Cup Champion, this man touched so many people's lives and was still going strong even at 89 years old.
He became the oldest trainer to win a Triple Crown race at the age of 88 with Seize The Gray a myracehorse owned horse.
This man simply ate, breathed, slept horse racing 24/7 and up until the very end, he was still there doing what he loved the most.
We always hear about the coaches tree in mainstream sports but Lukas by far was the King of the coaching tree in horse racing.
Todd Pletcher, George Weaver, Kiaran McLaughlin, Mike Maker, Mark Hennig, Dallas Stewart and Ron Moquett are all from his coaching tree. They all learned under him and was a trainer under him at one time.
He will be sorely missed and I really hope when they hold the BC this year they give him a fitting tribute.
RIP D Wayne, you were simply the best of the absolute best and will forever be the standard in horse racing.
