First off, great to see Abovethevig2 and Gerk really contributed to the forum last year, well done! Abovethevig2, sorry for the loss of your friend that you 'talked puck with' last year, I miss a buddy from the past as well and we did a similar thing.
I used to love hockey, mainly NHL, switched to following Jr hockey when I was disallusioned with NHL, but got back to NHL again. Not sure if I like the way things are changing, the bigger salaries. I don't like to see one or two players get such a high percentage of the cap space on a team, but that's just me, I am a bit of an older guy who reminices about the old days :)
Lol, I loved reading the newspaper every morning to get my spots info. One of my past jobs, pre internet, involved getting a package of info (60 to 90 pages) of sports info/stats, to review in evening for a meeting the next day. I loved going through all that paper, scribbling my notes etc, felt like I was earning an edge over others by putting the time into it. Now, more info than ever available out there with a few clicks .
Anyhow, I stepped away for a bit but going to try and get more involved here with some weekly picks or something (Used to try and do Hockey night in Canada, and provide my picks for all Canadian teams playing on Saturdays) as away to try and contribute. I would parlay those picks myself for my only hockey bet of the week
Sorry, I tend to talk a lot...
I am a Canucks fan and have followed them all my life, even though I left the province 24 years ago. Now they are going through a full rebuild so it will be awhile before they contend but I bet with my heart so already have fools money on them to win the cup! Great odds :)
Hockey is a business, like any other sport, and it just generally leaves a bad taste in my mouth, even though 'it is what it is' and that is why I have lost the passion for the game, as a fan. Give me the underdog, the hardworking team, with players not making the top dollar. I love the controversy of signings and deals I think are dumb, as that is the fun of being a fan, but when I see the size of salaries now for the top players, I don't know, it just doesn't feel right.
I hope the Canadians do well, Edmonton goes out in the first round again, the Senators do something and make the playoffs now, Leafs can miss the playoffs again, the Jets, I don't really care but hope they make playoffs because I like the small market team doing well, and the Flames, like to see them make playoffs as well. Of course I want the Canucks to win the cup, but just hope the team, becomes a team, players gel, they get the 'culture' right, and are a team I can be proud of, based on those things, not so much the end result this season. I hope they become a team other players would want to be part of, and I hope the fans stop being jackasses that make the rest of Canada cheer against the Canucks.
